Results of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU

The Czech Republic held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2022. The agenda of the Czech Presidency was significantly influenced by the current geopolitical situation, in particular the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the urgent need to respond adequately to it. Under the leadership of Czech ministers and diplomats, the negotiations achieved a number of major results in the legislative and non-legislative areas, which are summarised in this section of the website.

Energy and other issues related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These topics fundamentally determined the agenda and priorities of the entire historic second Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, which took place between 1 July and 31 December 2022. Despite the difficult situation the EU has to face, the Czech Republic has managed to maintain unity among the Member States even on the most complex issues. At the same time, we always sought to find a solution that all Member States could agree on.

The Czech Presidency has achieved a number of significant successes. Among the most significant of these are, for example, the approval of the seventh, eighth and ninth packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the suspension of the visa facilitation agreement with Russia, the approval of financial support for Ukraine, the approval of all the climate sections of the Fit for 55 package, and, in particular, the achievement of a broad consensus among Member States on the capping of gas prices.
